Not a Zero-Sum Game: China’s Internal Migration and the Wellbeing of Rural-origin Children

چکیده
Two-fifths of the 279 million children in China are directly affected by the on-going massive internal migration. Using data from a nationally representative survey covering junior high school students in both rural and urban areas, we examine the causal impacts of different migration processes (parental migration, child migration, and hukou conversion) on rural children’s wellbeing measured by cognitive abilities, school engagement, school attachment, health, educational aspirations, and confidence about the future. Results from propensity score matching analysis show that migration brings both benefits and costs to children. Bringing rural children to cities significantly improved their school performance and physical health on the one hand, but also reduced their educational aspirations and increased their anxiety towards the future on the other hand. Leaving children behind in the countryside, while avoiding potential social exclusions in cities, results in a negative impact on their physical and mental health. Gaining local urban hukou status can improve rural-origin children’s academic achievement to some extent, but has no effect on the other wellbeing indicators. These results reveal that the migration process per se and China’s unique hukou system have generated both opportunities and challenges for children involved. A TRANSITION FROM TWO-PERSON ZERO-SUM GAMES TO COOPERATIVE GAMES WITH FUZZY PAYOFFS
In this paper, we deal with games with fuzzy payoffs. We proved that players who are playing a zero-sum game with fuzzy payoffs against Nature are able to increase their joint payoff, and hence their individual payoffs by cooperating. It is shown that, a cooperative game with the fuzzy characteristic function can be constructed via the optimal game values of the zero-sum games with fuzzy payoff...
متن کاملMultiple attribute decision making with triangular intuitionistic fuzzy numbers based on zero-sum game approach
For many decision problems with uncertainty, triangular intuitionistic fuzzy number is a useful tool in expressing ill-known quantities. This paper develops a novel decision method based on zero-sum game for multiple attribute decision making problems where the attribute values take the form of triangular intuitionistic fuzzy numbers and the attribute weights are unknown. First, a new value ind...
متن کاملThe Causal Effects of Rural-to-Urban Migration on Children's Wellbeing in China.
China's rural-to-urban migration has affected 12.6 million school-age rural children who have migrated with their parents and another 22 million who have been left behind by their migrant parents. Not enough is known, either theoretically or empirically, about the causal impact of migration on the wellbeing of this large number of Chinese children affected by migration. Propensity score matchin...
متن کاملDistribution Design of Two Rival Decenteralized Supply Chains: a Two-person Nonzero Sum Game Theory Approach
We consider competition between two decentralized supply chains network under demand uncertainty. Each chain consists of one risk-averse manufacturer and a group of risk-averse retailers. These two chains present substitutable products to the geographical dispensed markets. The markets’ demands are contingent upon prices, service levels, and advertising efforts of two supply chains. We formulat...
متن کاملWhy Do They Want to Migrate from Rural Areas? A Psychological Perspective from Iran
While migration is a basic element of population dynamics in most societies, in Iran, rural-urban migration is a particular concern of both social scientists and policy makers. Rural-urban migration accounts for over half of the growth of most Iranian cities. On the other hand, this movement is often cited as having negative effects on rural area, including a shortage of supply of agricultural ...
